Rise and shine for an unforgettable morning on the water with Ozark Mountain Fly! Our half-day trip takes you deep into the heart of the Ouachita Mountains, where pristine streams and hidden fishing spots await. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting your feet wet, this 5.5-hour adventure is the perfect way to kick off your day in the Natural State.
We'll meet bright and early at 6:30 AM, when the fish are most active and the mountains are bathed in that gorgeous morning light. You'll have your choice of fly fishing from the bank, or hopping in a kayak or canoe to access those hard-to-reach honey holes. Our expert guide, Keith Reeves, knows these waters like the back of his hand and will put you on the fish while sharing local knowledge and fly fishing tips. The trip wraps up at noon, giving you plenty of time to relive your catches over lunch and plan your next Arkansas outdoor adventure.
Get ready to wet a line in some of the most scenic waters Arkansas has to offer. We'll be targeting wild smallmouth bass, known for their feisty fights and beautiful coloration. Depending on the day's conditions, we might use dry flies to tempt bass feeding on the surface, or switch to nymphs and streamers to entice those lurking in deeper pools. If you're new to fly fishing, don't worry – Keith will walk you through the basics of casting, reading the water, and presenting your fly. For more experienced anglers, he'll share some of his favorite local patterns and techniques that have been honed over years on these rivers.
There's something special about fly fishing in the Ouachitas that keeps folks coming back year after year. Maybe it's the crystal-clear water tumbling over ancient rock formations, or the chance to spot a bald eagle soaring overhead. Or perhaps it's the rush of feeling a smallmouth hammer your fly and take off downstream. Whatever draws you in, this trip offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, skilled guidance, and the thrill of the catch. Plus, with our small group size (max 4 anglers), you'll get plenty of one-on-one instruction and access to prime fishing spots.
Smallmouth Bass: These bronze-backed beauties are the stars of our Ouachita Mountain streams. Known locally as "brownies," smallmouth bass in these parts typically range from 10-14 inches, with the occasional trophy pushing past 18 inches. What they lack in size, they more than make up for in fight – pound for pound, smallies are some of the hardest-fighting freshwater fish you'll encounter. They love fast water and respond well to topwater flies, making for some explosive strikes that'll get your heart racing. Spring and early summer are prime times to target smallmouth, but they remain active throughout the warmer months. The clear waters of the Ouachitas let you sight-fish for these aggressive predators, adding an extra layer of excitement to every cast.
Our half-day trip gives you flexibility in how you want to fish. If you're comfortable wading, we'll hop from pool to pool, working our way upstream and hitting those prime holding spots where big bass like to lurk. For those who prefer to stay dry (or want to cover more water), we've got kayaks and canoes at the ready. Kayak fishing is a blast – it lets you sneak up on fish and access spots that bank anglers can't reach. As for gear, we'll be using 4-6 weight fly rods, floating lines, and a mix of dry flies, nymphs, and streamers. Keith's got a well-stocked fly box with local favorites like the Woolly Bugger, Clouser Minnow, and various poppers that smallmouth can't resist.
While every day on the water is different, we've been having some banner mornings lately. Last week, Jim from Little Rock landed a chunky 17-inch smallmouth on a foam hopper – talk about a surface explosion! And just yesterday, a father-daughter duo teamed up to bring in over 20 bass between them, with several in the 14-15 inch range. The fish have been particularly active in the early morning hours, so our 6:30 AM start time puts us in prime position to get in on the action.

Smallmouth bass are one of our favorite targets here in the Ouachitas. These scrappy fish usually run 1-3 pounds, but can get up to 5 or 6 in our rivers. Look for them around rocky areas, fallen trees, and deep pools. They love clear, cool water with some current. Spring and fall are prime times, when smallies are most active in shallower water. Summer can be trickier - they'll go deep to beat the heat. Early mornings and evenings are your best bet then. Folks love chasing smallmouth for their aggressive strikes and acrobatic fights. Pound-for-pound, they're some of the hardest fighting fish out there. They're also excellent eating if you want to keep a few for dinner. For flies, I like to start with small streamers or poppers. If that's not working, try nymphs or crawdad patterns. A local trick: toss your fly right up against the bank and let it drift naturally. Smallies often ambush from those shady spots.
